چکیده

All terrestrial higher plants preferentially assimilate CO 2 relative to CO 2 during photosynthesis as a result of physical and biological isotope fractionation processes, with much larger overall C fractionation by plants using the C 3 photosynthetic pathway (approximate range of 14–27‰) compared to plants using the C 4 pathway (approximate range of 3–6‰). Fractionation against CO 2 in both C 3 and C 4 plants includes kinetic and equilibrium isotope effects during the processes of gaseous diffusion of CO 2 along concentration gradients from the atmosphere to the sub-stomatal intercellular spaces, subsequent hydration and diffusion to the site of carboxylation in the chloroplast, and ultimately CO 2 fixation by the Rubisco enzyme (Farquhar et al. 1989). The key differences between C 3 and C 4 plants in photosynthetic C fractionation are described in detail elsewhere (Farquhar 1983; Farquhar et al. 1982, 1989), but the lower fractionation by C 4 plants is primarily the result of a negative isotope fractionation during hydration of CO 2 at equilibrium, combined with a reduced effective fractionation by Rubisco, as the bundle sheath cells approximate a closed compartment. As a result of these differences, C 4 plants have considerably more enriched dC values compared to C 3 plants; for example, a survey of grasses by Cerling et al. (1997) reported mean C 3 and C 4 plant dC values of −26.7‰ and −12.2‰, respectively.

A novel framework for quantifying past methane recycling by Sphagnummethanotroph symbiosis using carbon and hydrogen isotope ratios of leaf wax biomarkers

The concentration of atmospheric methane is strongly linked to variations in Earth’s climate. Currently, we can directly reconstruct the total atmospheric concentration of methane, but not individual terms of the methane cycle. Northern wetlands, dominated by Sphagnum, are an important contributor of atmospheric methane, and we seek to understand the methane cycle in these systems. We present a...

Stable isotope ratios in winter-grown feathers of Great Reed Warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus, Clamorous Reed Warblers A. stentoreus and their hybrids in a sympatric breeding population in Kazakhstan

Analyses of the stable isotope composition of feathers can provide significant insight into the spatial structure of bird migration. We collected feathers from Great Reed Warblers Acrocephalus arundinaceus, Clamorous Reed Warblers A. stentoreus and a small sample of their hybrids in a sympatric breeding population in Kazakhstan to assess natural variation in stable isotope signatures and deline...

Global comparisons of organic matter in sediments across the Cretaceous/Tertiary boundary

A~tract--The Cretaceous/Tertiary (K/T) boundary is marked by extensive changes in the sedimentary fossil record of continental and marine life. Organic matter in sediments from above and below the K/T boundary has been studied to identify consequences of the biotic extinctions and of the changes in biological productivity which occurred at this time. Data from locations encompassing a variety o...

Stable isotope ecology in the Omo-Turkana Basin.

Stable isotopes provide an independent assessment of paleoenvironments in the Omo-Turkana Basin. Stable isotopes track the flow of oxygen and carbon through ecosystems and accordingly are not directly related to changes in mammalian faunal composition or sedimentology. Therefore, isotope studies give insight into the paleoenvironmental conditions in which human evolutionary trends have been rec...
